How to Archive Email in Mozilla Thunderbird

If your mailbox is full or starting to approach the disk space capacity you may need to archive messages by moving them to an offline location on your computer. This will allow you to free up space in your mailbox without permanently deleting your messages. Archived items remain easy to find from the search box or by navigating to your Archive folder. Configure Archiving in Mozilla Thunderbird #

To configure Archiving in Thunderbird follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click on your email account in the main pane of Thunderbird and select SETTINGS from the drop-down menu.
  2. In the left-hand pane select COPIES & FOLDERS and in the right-hand pane scroll down to MESSAGE ARCHIVES.

  3. Enable “Keep message archives in:” and select “Archives Folder on:“. Then choose LOCAL FOLDERS from the drop-down.
  4. Click on the [ARCHIVE OPTIONS] button.
  5. Set your preference for “When archiving messages, place them in:” We recommend “A single folder” setting, but you can choose “Monthly archived folders” or “Yearly archived folders” according to your preference.

  6. Enable “Keep existing folder structure of archived messages“. This will keep a separate Archive folder just like the folders you have setup on your mailbox.
  7. Click on the [OK] button to save your changes.
